David Garrett was born in Aachen of German-American parentage. Under the influence of his father he developed an interest in the violin at a very young age, making his first public appearance at the age of 10 with Gerd Albrecht and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In August 1992, he attracted the attention of the great violinist Ida Haendel, who promoted his artistic development. More recently David moved to New York as one of the first three students to study with Itzhak Perlman and has now graduated from the Julliard School. Since his childhood, David Garrett has performed with international orchestras in all the major cities. Of particular note are his performances with the London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Russian National Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Paris, the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Staatskapelle Dresden. David has enjoyed working with the finest conductors including Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Herbert Blomstedt, Charles Dutoit, Eliahu Inbal and Mikhail Pletnev. In 1996 he performed the Elgar Violin Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra achieving phenomenal success under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin in the Vienna Musikverein. David’s recent engagements have included a tour of Japan with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, a recital tour of South America and concerts with the Flanders Philharmonic, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (as part of the Mostly Mozart Festival), the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Lie`ge, the Aubern Symphony, the Saarla¨ndischer Rundfunk Orchestra and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2005/06 season David returns to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for three concerts with Leonard Slatkin and to the Far East to perform with the Tokyo Symphony and Taiwan National Symphony Orchestras. He also performs in the USA, Canada, Italy, Germany and France, including concerts with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra. David Garrett signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 1994 − their youngest soloist ever. His second CD with Mozart Violin Concertos under Claudio Abbado was released in autumn 1995, and his third, with the 24 Paganini Caprices, followed in April 1997. His recording of Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D, Op.35 with the Russian National Orchestra under Pletnev, was released to critical acclaim in Autumn 2001. To coincide with his Night of the Proms tour of Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany in Autumn 2002 Deutsche Grammophon released “Pure Classics”, the best of David Garrett. David Garrett plays the “San Lorenzo” Stradivarius from 1718, which is among the best instruments of the “golden period” and was especially commissioned by the Grand Duke of San Lorenzo. |
