Ms. Fujiko Hemming was awarded many prestigious prizes in several major domestic
competitions while she was a student at Tokyo National University of Fine Art
and Music.
She began her active professional performance career immediately after graduation.
After studying at the Berlin Institute of Music, she was recognaized and highly
acclaimed
by Bruno Maderna, one of the greatest composer-conductor of 20th centuty, and
was also eagerly supported by Leonard Bernstein who showed a keen interest in
her.
Suddenly after suffering from a high fever during a recital series in Vienna,
she lost her hearing entirely for two years.
Right after her recent returning to Japan, A TV documentary on her playing and
turbulent life story was broadcasted in Feb. 1999. It received an unprecedented
great sensational reaction and made her star of classical music in one night.
In the same year her debut CD "La Campanella" was released and sold
over 900, 000 copies, as of April 2002, an incomparable event in the classical
music scene. This CD and another one have received the Japan Gold Disc Award and
various Classical Albums of the Year awards.
Following the numbers of her successful domestic concert tours, Ms. Hemming held
her debut New York's Carnegie Hall recital filled with an enthusiastic audience
of 3,000 people on June 2001. And then she made her piano concerto concert debut
at Dvorak Hall in Prague on September. Shortly after her returning to Japan, Ms.
Hemming accomplished her performances in more than thirty five concerts altogether
on an epoch making four-month-long Japan tour with the Czech National Symphony
Orchestra.
In early summer of 2002 she made a six-stop cross-country tour of Europe and in
the fall a joint tour of Japan with conductor Yuri Simonov and the Moscow Philharmonic
Orchestra followed by the another tours of the United States and Europe. This
brisk pace of activities is accelerating both at home and abroad and she continues
to receive fervent broad endorsement from all ages of both classical and non-classical
music fans.
