| Born in Romania, Angela Gheorghiu attended and graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Music. After debuting at the National Theater of Cluj-Napoca by playing the part of Mimi in La Boheme, Gheorghiu went on to receive such prizes such as the Vienna International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition Main Prize and the Lisbon Gulbenkian Prize. At the Musical Theater of Basel in Switzerland, Angela Gheorghiu made her international debut performing the role of Adina in Gaetano Donizetti’s L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love). Her stunning voice and dazzling beauty made her an instant international star, penetrating the international market by performing at such venues as the Metropolitan Opera House, Vienna State Opera House, and Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Gheorghiu especially attracted attention with her notable performances as Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme, LiÙ in Puccini’s Turandot, and as Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen. In 1994, she performed Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata, composed by Sir George Solti with the British Royal Opera. This magnificent performance put the seal on her reputation as a world-class opera singer. In the past two years, Gheorghiu’s major performances have included roles in La Rondine and I Pagliacci at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, as well as performances of Romeo and Juliet at The Choregies d'Orange festival and Salzburg Festival. Also, at the New York Metropolitan Opera, Seoul, Athens and the Vatican, Gheorghiu has performed Faust. All performances have been hugely successful. Angela Gheorghiu has also received from the French Minister of Culture, the Chevalier rank in L’orde Des Arts Et Des Lettres, and from her homeland of Romania, the Oficier rank in L’orde Des Arts Et Des Lettres. |
