Philippe Entremont is internationally renowned as an artist of remarkable technique
and distinctive style, both at the piano keyboard and on the podium.
He was born in France and, at the age of twelve, entered the Paris Conservatory
to study under the guidance of Jean Doyen. He made his professional debut in
1953, at the age of sixteen, in Barcelona, Spain. At the age of nineteen, he
became the First Laureate and Grand Prix Winner of the "Marguerite Long
- Jacques Thibaud Competition". He also made his American debut in 1953,
appearing at the National Gallery in Washington DC and in New York the following
day.
Since then, Philippe Entremont has appeared on five continents, both as guest
artist with the finest orchestras and as recitalist. He has conducted such
orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic; National Orchestra of France; Orchestral
Ensemble of Paris; Academy of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields; National Orchestra
of Spain; Rome's Santa Cecilia Orchestra; Vienna Symphony Orchestra; as well
as the orchestras of Philadelphia, Saint-Louis, San-Francisco, "Mostly
Mozart" Festival Orchestra, NHK-Tokyo and many others.
Since 1976, Philippe Entremont is the lifetime Music Director of the Vienna
Chamber Orchestra. In January 1991, he led this orchestra in the opening concert
of the "Mozart Celebrations" at the Royal Theatre in Versailles.
In January 1993 he was appointed principal and permanent conductor of the Netherlands
Chamber Orchestra.
Philippe Entremont is the proud recipient of many honours, including the "Grand
Prix du Disque"; The Netherlands "Edison Award"; New Orleans "International
Order of Merit"; and a Grammy nomination. From 1972 to 1979 he was President
of the Maurice Ravel Academy. As a Knight of the Legion of Honour, Philippe
Entremont was awarded Austria's First Class Cross of Honour for the Arts and
Sciences.
