Cristian Mandeal

Cristian Mandeal’s ascent in his quality of conductor results from his solid studies. In piano, composition and conducting, first at the Music High School in Brasov then at the Academy of Music in Bucharest; he had the privilege to attend Herbert von Karajan’s master courses in Berlin and those of Sergiu Celibibidache in Munich.
At the end of his studies, after his experience as coach at the Romanian Opera, Cristian Mandeal asserts himself as conductor in Targu Mures and Cluj. After this, he becomes General Music Director of the “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra in Bhucharest. At the same time, he has the occasion to conduct ones of the most well-known Orchestras as Staatskapelle in Dresden, Hessisches Rundfunk Orchestra in Frankfurt or RIAS Orchester Philharmoniker, Santa Cecilia - Roma, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra - Tokyo, Südwestfunk Orchester, Wiener Staatoper, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Bayerisches Rundfunk Orchestra.
Cristian Mandeal has collaborated with numerous renowned artists as Radu Lupu, Ivo Pogorelich, Bruno Leonardo Gelber, Maurice André, Viktor Tretiakov, Gerhard Oppitz, Ileana Cotrubas, Mstislav Rostrovitch, Alicia de Larrocha, Yefim Bronfman.
He conducted in great concert halls as Berliner Philharmoniker, Gewandhaus Leipzigt Bolshoi Theatre - Moscow, Gasteig - Munich, Suntory Hall - Tokyo, Beethovenhalle - Bonn, Alte Oper - Frankfurt, Grosser Festspielsaal - Salzburg, Victoria Hall - Genevet Tonhalle - Zurich, Wiener Staatsoper Hall.
Cristian Mandeal has participated to numerous musical festivals - “Gerge Enescu” International Festival in Bucharest to the Festivals from Istanbul, Ankara, Lisboa, Santander, Brescia-Bergamo, the Festival of the Young Musicians in Bayreuth, Janacek Festival - Ostrawa, as well as to annual festivals in Bloomington in the United States, where he is also invited from several years to teach at the summer courses and the Edinbourgh Festival (2002)..
A prestigious achievement is represented by the records with he did with the nine Bruckner’s symphonies for the Romanian recording House Electrecord. Still 1996 he achieves a CD production under ARTE NOVA label distributed by EMG-Ariola. This production includes a complete series of symphony and vocal-symphony works by Brahms which appeared at the composers death centenarian in 1997, and a complete series of George Enescu’s symphony works. Recently he recorded a CD dedicated to Jesús Arámbarri with the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra and the soprano María Bayo, for the CLAVES Records company for Switzerland.
Cristian Mandeal was recently appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor at the Northern Israelian Symphony - Haifa and Permanent Conductor of the “Haydn Orchestra di Bolzano e Trento” - Italy, as well as Director of the “George Enescu Festival and International Competition”. Since 2001/2002 Season, he shares with Gilbert Varga the Musical Direction of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra.
